Role Purpose

 

The Turbine Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining turbines to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable power generation or mechanical drive operations. The role ensures optimal performance, adherence to safety standards, and compliance with statutory regulations.


Key Responsibilities

1. Turbine Operation

 

  • Operate steam, gas, or hydro turbines according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Monitor turbine parameters including speed, temperature, pressure, vibration, and lubrication.

  • Start, stop, and adjust turbines as per operational requirements or load demand.

2. Safety & Compliance

 

  • Follow safety protocols, lockout tagout (LOTO) procedures, and emergency shutdown procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, environmental norms, and plant safety standards.

  • Report abnormal conditions, incidents, or hazards immediately to shift in-charge.

3. Maintenance & Troubleshooting

 

  • Conduct routine inspections of turbines and auxiliary systems (lubrication, cooling, bearings).

  • Detect and report faults or irregularities to maintenance engineers.

  • Perform minor maintenance and adjustments within the scope of responsibility.

4. Coordination & Communication

 

  • Coordinate with control room operators, engineers, and maintenance teams.

  • Ensure smooth handover during shift changes.

  • Maintain proper documentation of turbine operations, inspections, and maintenance activities.

5. Performance Optimization

 

  • Monitor turbine efficiency and suggest improvements to reduce energy loss.

  • Ensure proper lubrication, cooling, and load balancing to prolong turbine life.

  • Participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of turbine issues.


Key Skills & Competencies

 

  • Strong knowledge of turbine operation, thermodynamics, and auxiliary systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret gauges, control panels, and technical diagrams.

  • Awareness of safety procedures and statutory compliance.

  • Mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

  • Teamwork, communication, and shift coordination skills.


Qualifications

 

  • Diploma / ITI / Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Power Engineering

  • Turbine Operation Certification or training preferred

  • Safety and emergency handling training desirable


Experience

 

  • 2 5 years of experience in turbine operation in power plants or industrial setups.

  • Experience with steam, gas, or hydro turbines is preferred.
